BCC toughens stance on defaulting ratepayers

by Edward Ncube Thursday, 26 January 2012 18:21 The Bulawayo City Council has taken its war against defaulters to another level as it will on Friday auction household property attached from them early this month. The property was attached through the Messenger of Court in Bulawayo. The local authority is owed more than US$61 million, forcing it to resort to issue defaulters, who owe them US$50 and above, summons. Nine defaulters’ property listed by BCC would be sold on public auction. Residents have since condemned the council for the move. They urged the Thaba Moyo-led council to come up with resident friendly payment plans. However a resident who hails from Entumbane, Mrs Rosemary Mkhandla said residents should remember that the city council could only be able to render good service delivery to the people if they honoured their debts. “There are other services that we need from the city council but if people do not play their bills, we will always complain about poor service delivery.
