Matabeleland Tuskers fire manager

... ex-national team selector Vumindaba Moyo bounces back amid controversy

The newly formed Matabeleland Tuskers cricket franchise has fired their area manager, Joshua Paul under controversial circumstances in a situation whereby Vumindaba Moyo becomes the new manager after losing his position as a national team selector. Mrs Julia Ndlovu, who was Paul's assistant was transferred to the Southern Rocks franchise which is based in Masvingo.

There has been speculation that there are some sections within Tuskers who have been pushing for the sacking of Paul for a long time as he is said to be not from the “region”. Paul came to Bulawayo in December last year from Masvingo Province and was immediately elavated to the position of Area Manager. After the formation of the regional franchises by Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), there were hopes that there were going to be many openings in the region but things changed otherwise with the sacking of Paul. What makes the issue more controversial is the claim by Paul that he only got to know of his sacking through the press when he was out of town. “ I only heard that I got fired from the press and then later on a friend told me. What I dont know is who fired me, ZC (Zim Cricket) or Tuskers. If it is Tuskers, then they do not have the right to fire me as I'm contracted by ZC. As for now I have not received official confirmation from ZC”, he said.

Speaking at the Bulawayo Metropolitan Cricket Association annual general meeting recently, Tuskers Chief Executive Officer, Stanley Staddon said Vumindaba Moyo is the new area manager. Contraty to Paul's claims, Staddon even went on to say that Paul was fired by ZC as his name was not amongst those recommended to them as deployments. It also emerged that Paul's contract was terminated by ZC even way before the national cricket awards held in Bulawayo two months ago.

Sources privy to the issue told ZICORA that Paul was relieved of his duties just as a ploy to create a post for Moyo who lost his place as a national team selecor because of lack of experience at international level especially during his playing days. Efforts to contact the head of media and communications at ZC, Mrs Shingi Ruhwaya were unsuccessful as she reneged on her promise to call this reporter back after initial contact.
