NOTTS County insist Manchester City striker Benjani Mwaruwari was not a summer target following claims
by former England defender Sol Campbell who quit the League Two outfit after playing just once for them.Campbell quit ambitious Notts County, where he had signed for five years, accusing them of “broken promises”. "I knew I would be the club's first big signing but was told I would be the first of many. Names like Roberto Carlos and Benjani were mentioned. But nothing materialised,” the 35-year-old said last Sunday. But Notts County CEO Peter Trembling denied Campbell’s claims on Wednesday, saying: “I've never talked about Benjani. Sven [Goran Erikkson] did talk [to Carlos] but it never went beyond a conversation." Zimbabwe international captain Benjani was a target for a host of clubs in the English Premier League and lower divisions during the summer transfer window but no move materialised. The 31-year-old has not played in the Premier League this season because of a troublesome thigh injury which has dogged him over the last 12 months. Last season, he featured for Manchesster City just eight times and is not expected to feature for City until early November. Following the arrival of strikers Craig Bellamy, Roque Santa Cruz, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor at ambitious City, Mwaruwari is now expected to depart in January with a move to his former club Portsmouth likely.
